Babanginy Yongka is a platform dedicated to contemporary indigenous art. We aim to create, present, and perform diverse artworks that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Noongar people. Our goal is to build a community around indigenous art and provide learning opportunities for both artists and art enthusiasts.
The Noongar people are the traditional custodians of the southwest corner of Western Australia, with a continuous culture that spans at least 45,000 years, making it one of the oldest on Earth. Our culture, deeply connected to boodja (land), is reflected in stories, songs, dances, and six distinct seasons that guide our way of life. Noongar Country, or Noongar Boodja, encompasses diverse landscapes, from coastal plains to forests, shaped by their sustainable and harmonious relationship with nature. With 14 distinct language groups, Noongar people maintain a rich linguistic and cultural heritage. Despite the challenges of colonisation and dispossession, Noongar people continue to assert our identity, preserve our traditions, and share our knowledge with pride. Today, Noongar culture is celebrated through visual arts, theatre, and initiatives that deepen cultural understanding across communities.
